Is this a fringe belief? Sure. It may be the craziest thing I write about. But I don’t feel too guilty about it. It’s harmless and comes from a loving place!
In brief, there’s a small (but growing) faction of scholars who question whether Jesus was a real person. If it were true that Jesus was purely mythological, this would be pretty wild news. And that’s what makes it fun to dabble in.
Care to humor my dabbling? Please do!
Here’s a mythicism starter kit on YouTube, with arguments for and against:
Richard Carrier laying out his case. Good stuff here. Got an hour? Worth it.
Bart Ehrman arguing why mythicism is dumb. I’m a fan of Ehrman’s writing and think it’s valuable to hear how strongly he disagrees with the mythicism position.
My essay on why mythicism is about to go mainstream.
If you survived all or any of that and are still interested, then you’re ready to join me in my latest conversation on Team Futurism with mythicist Godless Engineer. In this talk, we accept that Jesus mythicism is a reasonable view and we take the conversation up from there. Check it out on YouTube below. The Team Futurism podcast is also available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
