There’s something so asexual about left-coded degeneracy. It’s HR-approved: free from danger, maximally inclusive, Corporate Memphis-like. It’s juvenile: comedically gross, full of play-pretend power dynamics, childishly rebellious against some real or imagined Christian father.
The above quote by Rae on Twitter, which has 3.3 million views and thousands of positive comments, was inspired by someone sharing the song “One Thing” by Lola Young, declaring it the song of the summer.
In her critique of “One Thing,” Rae is wrong to call the video asexual. Almost every frame of the video is dripping with sexuality, albeit an unconformable, ironic, angry kind of sexuality.
But even if the word “asexual” isn’t quite right, I do get what Rae is suggesting with its use. Any type of degenerate art that’s left-coded simply cannot be straightforwardly sexual. It can’t make you think, “Damn, that’s hot.” It can only make you see it as something comical, raunchy, rebellious, or socially conscious. As a result, it may as well be asexual in the sense that no one is unironically enjoying sex for sex’s sake (let along for the sake of procreation).
By definition, left-coded art stands in opposition to traditional values and relationships. Where conservative art preserves tradition, liberal art challenges tradition. This generally makes left-coded art more radical, and definitely more interesting, than conservative art.
The problem for left-coded art at this point in history—post sexual revolution—is that liberal attitudes toward sex and relationships have become mainstream. For anyone who is a Millennial or younger, it’s the norm to grow up in a household that does not include two parents who are married to each other. According to Pew, only 46% of American kids grew up in a family where both parents were in their first marriage. We also all grew up in a world where homosexual relationships were entirely normal. And of course we’ve all been desensitized to the potential shock value of porn thanks to the internet.
This new reality makes old-school left-coded degeneracy seem impotent. But ironically, the antinatalist spirit of left-coded degeneracy has also become uniquely dangerous to society, in a way that it never was in the past. Decades ago, everyone was legitimately worried about the sustainability of population growth. Now we’ve come to learn that the true danger is with the impending population collapse.
Meanwhile, right-coded degeneracy is hyper sexual and unapologetically pronatalist. The natalist movement itself has become associated with the far right. Same with the trad-wife movement. Not to mention the manosphere. Even the independent porn world of OnlyFans features a strain of religious conservativism.
Brilliantly illustrating the point, here’s Russell Brand simultaneously signaling to the natalists, the trad-wives, the manosphere, and the Jesus freaks:
It’s a strange new world. On the one hand, left-coded degeneracy is culturally impotent but dangerous. On the other, right-coded degeneracy is edgy but important for preservation of the species.
The only way out of this situation is for the degenerate left to realize that being a sexual deviant is not as edgy or interesting as it used to be. They should accept the ironic position that the most degenerate thing to do is to be have a stable family with lots of kids.
It’s either that or go full Church of Euthanasia. The one commandment being: “Thou shalt not procreate.” And the four pillars being: suicide, abortion, cannibalism, and sodomy.
Which way will it be, degenerate left? Better check with HR first.
I’d like to know where asexuality is in that video 😆 because I definitely don’t see it.
Great points here. A lot of times, when lefty art is supposed to be provocative, it only aims at safe targets. Like, a female serial killer who only targets problematic men. Or a bold takedown of the mostly white publishing industry. It’s not actually risky at all because the audience embraces it.
