I’ve long thought that popularity ruins everything. For a while I was thinking of uprooting myself and going somewhere more popular, maybe California. But I feel like there’s far less competition and more opportunity to build your own California wherever you are. And it might even make the real California better.

Yeah there's definitely something to be said for starting something new and not just chasing a familiar dream. Although I'd say that, particularly for young people with big ambitions, it's important to spend time in big-city cultural hubs. When I moved to California after living in small towns in Washington state, I was immediately impressed by how outgoing and ambitious people were in California. This ambition can be intoxicating. There are dark sides to this, but in general cultural hubs lead people to accomplish more in life and to generally be more interesting.

Intoxicating is right. I don’t think you can do something in a small place unless you’ve made a point to go experience other places.
